Last Breath of Samyan Movie Screening

“Last Breath of Samyan” is an award-winning documentary that shows Chulalongkorn University’s attempts to gentrify and dismantle a sacred shrine, sparking an opposition student movement. The film captures the tensions between modern development and cultural preservation, spotlighting the efforts of students and local communities to protect this meaningful space in the center of Bangkok, Thailand. This documentary will add to the ongoing conversation of the global fight against gentrification and to preserve historic culture, especially through the lens of Southeast Asia. Thaigers is collaborating with Engage Thailand, an organization that advocates for democracy and human rights in the country, to screen the documentary followed by a Q A session with the producer and student activist Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, who played a pivotal role in pushing back against the university’s gentrification efforts. Neitiwit will be joined by Professor Aaron Shkuda, who is teaching the class Mapping Gentrification. The event is kindly sponsored by PIIRS.
