Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies takes part in the 12th Day of Memory and Welcome in Lampedusa with the workshop ‘Memory, Migrations and Rights’ m.nazzari Tue, 09/30/2025 - 11:52 From September 30 to October 3, 2025, Lampedusa will host the 12th edition of the Day of Memory and Welcome, an event created to honor the victims of the shipwreck of October 3, 2013, when more than 360 people lost their lives just a few miles off the island’s coast. Since then, this anniversary has become a symbol of shared memory and, in 2016, was officially recognized as the National Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Immigration.The 2025 edition, entitled “Active Memories”, goes beyond commemoration of the past and seeks to transform remembrance into a collective commitment for the present and the future. Through debates, activities with schools, meetings with scholars, institutional representatives, and third sector organizations, Lampedusa confirms itself as an open and participatory space for reflection.The goal is to strengthen citizens’ awareness and to raise the sensitivity of younger generations on crucial issues such as the protection of fundamental rights, the dignity of migrants, and the need to build inclusive communities. In this context, memory becomes a driving force for change, capable of fostering dialogue that brings together direct testimonies, academic research, and social engagement.The contribution of Sant Anna SchoolRepresenting Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies will be Kamilla Galicz and Simone Frega, research fellows at the Dirpolis Institute and members of the DREAM area – Data, Research and Analysis on Migration – who will take part in the activities by providing a scientific and educational contribution.Their workshop, entitled “Memory, Migrations and Rights”, aims to create a space for dialogue on how the memory of sea tragedies can be transformed into critical awareness and concrete actions in support of fundamental rights. The proposed pathway seeks to foster dialogue among students, citizens, and professionals, highlighting how academic research and civic engagement can mutually reinforce each other.Sant’Anna School’s participation in this event underscores the role of the university as a space for dialogue between research and society, as well as an active player in promoting shared responsibilities. It is a tangible sign of the academic community’s commitment to connecting scientific production with the needs of society, turning cultural elaboration into practical tools for imagining and building a fairer and more inclusive future.
