He completed medical school at Al-Quds University in Palestine, and his residency in neurology at University of Iowa where he served as a chief resident. Elmashala pursued neurocritical care fellowships at the University of Florida and Massachusetts General Brigham hospitals. Elmashala is board-certified in neurology with a clinical interest in education and medical simulation. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Neurocritical Care Society, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
