Biography
Tae Woon Chong, MD, is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who serves as Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. His clinical expertise ecompasses a broad spectrum of complex reconstructive procedures, including breast reconstruction, limb salvage and lymphatic surgery.
Chong earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine followed by a general surgery internship at University of Chicago. He completed his general surgery residency at University of Virginia Health System. During that time he also completed a research fellowship focused on transplantation and infectious disease. He then completed advanced plastic and reconstructive surgery training at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Prior to his tenure at Rush, he served as the Division Chair of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health. He also previously held leadership roles at the University of Colorado and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, contributing significantly to the advancement of reconstructive microsurgery and surgical education.
Beyond his clinical and administrative roles at Rush, Chong is actively involved in advancing the field of plastic surgery through research and education. His interests include clinical outcomes research on cancer reconstruction, therapeutics on keloid recurrence and limb salvage.
Outside of the medical center, Chong enjoys hiking and skiing as well as traveling and exploring new restaurants with his family.
