The latest episode of the Democracy in Question podcast, hosted by CEU President and Rector Shalini Randeria, features Steffen Mau, Professor of Macrosociology at Humboldt University, Berlin.
Since 2021, Mau also been a member of the Berlin based Expert Council on Integration and Migration. His research focuses on questions of inequality, the moral economy of welfare states, migration, and the sociology of borders. Mau has provided policy advice to various German foundations, federal ministries and political parties. Among his numerous awards are the highly prestigious Leibniz Prize (2021), the Schader Prize (2023), the Prize Against Forgetting for Democracy (2023) and the German Sociological Association s prize for outstanding achievements in the field of public sociology (2025).
His monographs available in English include: “Social Transformation: Lifeworlds Beyond the Nation State” (2010), “Inequality, Marketization and the Majority Class: Why Did the European Middle Classes Accept Neoliberalism?” (2015) and “Sorting Machines: The Reinvention of Borders in the 21st Century” (2022).
In this episode Steffen Mau on the German Elections released on March 5, Randeria and her guest explore the recent German elections and related social, economic and cultural issues. How did welfare measures, migration and history play a role in the elections outcome? And how might universities serve as models for democratic engagement and outreach?
