Steven Gianakas, PhD, AuD, is an Assistant Professor in the Communication Disorders and Sciences Department in the College of Health Sciences at Rush University Medical Center. He completed his AuD at the University of Washington and his PhD at the University of Minnesota. Gianakas also completed a clinical/research fellowship at Stanford University and a postdoctoral research fellowship at Boys Town National Research Hospital. Gianakas research aims to improve the testing of hearing loss and improve the impact of audiologic interventions in the lives of children and adults who are hard of hearing. The focus of his work is to better understand and address aspects of hearing loss and communication challenges that are not detected by standard audiologic measures. Specifically, his work aims to better understand how listening with a hearing loss can be an effortful and tiring experience for children and adults. To investigate these issues, he uses clinically feasible behavioral methods that are complemented by physiologic time-series measures.
