The latest episode of the Democracy in Question podcast, hosted by CEU President and Rector Shalini Randeria, features Stephen Walt. He is the Robert and Renee Belfer Professor in International Affairs at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Walt previously taught at Princeton University and the University of Chicago, where he served as Master of the Social Science Collegiate Division and Deputy Dean of Social Sciences. He has been a Resident Associate of the Carnegie Endowment for Peace, a Guest Scholar at the Brookings Institution, and a consultant for the Institute of Defense Analyses, the Center for Naval Analyses, and the National Defense University. His books include: Taming American Power: The Global Response to U.S. Primacy (2005), Revolution and War (1997), and The Orgins of Alliances (1990). In May 2005, Walt was elected a Fellow in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
In this episode Stephen Walt on the Return of Trump (Part 1)  released on November 13, Randeria and her guest examine the factors which led to Donald Trump s decisive victory in the recent U.S. election. Did the Harris campaign’s insistence on issues of identity, rights and democracy overshadow people s everyday struggles with economic issues? What role did patriarchal bias and demographics of a shifting landscape of political preferences play in this election? And finally, will the bark of Trump’s campaign promises be worse than the actual bite of the coming presidency?
For each episode of Democracy in Question, Randeria invites a leading scholar or public figure to explore the challenges and dilemmas facing democracies around the world. Listen to the trailer and subscribe here.
Series nine of Democracy in Question is produced in partnership with the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy at the Graduate Institute in Geneva (AHCD) where Randeria is a Senior Fellow. ACHD and the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna co-produced seasons one and two of the podcast.
