Best First Book Award From the American Branch of the International Law Association Goes to Patryk I. Labuda

Assistant Professor Patryk I. Labuda from CEU’s Department of International Relations received the American Branch of the International Law Association’s (ABILA) book award for a first-time author for “International Criminal Tribunals and Domestic Accountability – In the Court’s Shadow” (Oxford University Press, 2023). The award was conferred during the 2024 International Law Weekend, October 24-26 in New York City.  The ABILA Book Awards were established to recognize the best books on international law. The book award for a first-time author is awarded annually to the best first book published on international law or a topic in international law by an author who has not previously published a book on this or any other subject.   “It is a special feeling to get an award for a book based on a PhD project, which captures a decade of my life, including fieldwork in several countries around the world,” said Labuda, whose book project emerged from his dissertation at the Geneva Graduate Institute. Labuda added: “I hope this book will help scholars and practitioners to think more creatively about what international institutions like the International Criminal Court can accomplish in the states where they operate.   The book, “International Criminal Tribunals and Domestic Accountability – In the Court’s Shadow”, investigates how the influence of international criminal tribunals impacts the treatment of serious crimes at the national level. It draws upon research and interviews in Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone to build a framework in service of analyzing how states and tribunals work with, despite, or against one another in the fight against impunity. By examining how international accountability stakeholders relate to their domestic counterparts, the book advocates for improvements to the institutional design of International Criminal Tribunals and for more dynamic interactions with states to strengthen the enforcement of international criminal law.  Prior to joining CEU, Labuda was an Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam and held positions at institutions including the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, NYU School of Law and University of Zurich. In 2024, he was elected to a four-year term on the Board of the European Society of International Law.  This term at CEU, Labuda is teaching “International Law in a Turbulent World”, a course that aims to assess how international law matters for international affairs in the 21st century. It identifies both the strengths and limits of today’s norms in a decentralized legal system that lacks the means of universal coercive enforcement. Next term, he will teach “International Law, Empire and Colonialism”, a course designed to introduce students to how empire and colonialism shape the past and present of international law’s theories, doctrines and practices. This academic year Labuda will also teach “Introduction to International Relations and Global Governance”.   Visit here to learn about International Relations at CEU and peruse new release books by CEU academic staff and researchers.  Unit: Department of International RelationsDoctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy, and International RelationsResearch Area: Constitutions, Law and RegulationInternational RelationsCategory: NewsImage: Content Priority: High
