CEU to Host 28 Exhibitions as Part of Austria’s Long Night of Research 2024

As part of Austria’s Long Night of Research (LNF) on May 24, CEU will open its doors to the public with 28 exhibition stations presented by the university’s academic researchers. Animating a range of scientific work, CEU will serve as one of Vienna’s hubs for this edition of LNF – Austria s largest event featuring science, research and innovation.   Every two years, the LNF brings to life scientific findings from nine subject areas: digitalization, energy, society, health, culture, natural sciences, technology, environment and economy. This year at CEU, visitors can experience research up close through guided tours, workshops, lectures and presentations from 10 of the university’s departments. Admission to the event (lasting from 5-11 p.m.) is free and presentations at CEU’s site are offered in English.  CEU’s Department of Cognitive Sciences will provide the unique and rare opportunity for guided tours of both the Kiko Lab, which studies the cognitive development of children between the ages of three months and eight years, and the Vision Lab, which runs experiments regarding vision and cognitive processes. The Adaptive Cognition in Economics and Society (ACES) research group, which focuses on cognitive science informed by and relevant to the social sciences, the Language Comprehension Lab (LCL) and the Social Mind and Body (SOMBY) group will also host several hands-on stations and exhibitions. Through talks, interactive quizzes, coordination and cooperation games, visitors can learn how the university researchers study the human mind.  Related to contemporary social issues, a team from CEU’s Department of Network and Data Sciences will discuss research on “Where Need is Greatest: Finding Poverty Hotspots”. In “Making Women Count”, Laura Rahm from the Department of Public Policy will feature data related to the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goal focused on gender equality. From the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy, Adel Boumerzoug’s BIO4EEB exhibition will showcase bio-based materials that offer a climate-friendly alternative to traditional building materials.   In addition to the aforementioned topics, Maria Kromfeldner, from the university’s Department of Philosophy will give a reading and performance of her book “What’s Left of Human Nature” alongside exhibited images and text. The book, published by MIT Press, is a philosophical account defending human nature against dehumanization, Darwinian, and developmentalist challenges.  Finally, related to CEU’s participation in the Eurasian Transformations Cluster of Excellence research, Robyn Radway will discuss Eurasian Friendship Albums. Such albums, collections created on decorative paper created by artisans in Eurasia, were collected by central Europeans living in Ottoman Constantinople. In conjuction with her research, Radway will host a station where visitors can make friendship albums of their own to take home.   For the full program and schedule of CEU’s 2024 LNF exhibition stations, including additional exhibitions from CEU’s Department of International Relations and the Romani Studies Program, visit here.  Unit: Center for Cognitive Computation (Department of Cognitive Science)Department of Public PolicyDepartment of Environmental Sciences and PolicyDepartment of HistoryDepartment of International RelationsDepartment of PhilosophyCategory: NewsImage: Content Priority: Top
