Democracy in Question: Yanis Varoufakis on Technofeudalism

The latest episode of the Democracy in Question podcast, hosted by CEU President and Rector Shalini Randeria, features economist, politician and author Yanis Varoufakis. He is the Secretary General of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025, the founding secretary of the Greek political party, European Realistic Disobedience Front, and Professor of Economics at the University of Athens. His influential books about the 2008 global financial crisis, the Eurozone crisis and contemporary capitalism include “Adults in the Room”, “The Global Minotaur: America, the True Origins of the Financial Crisis and the Future of the World Economy”, “The Weak Suffer What They Must”, “Talking to My Daughter about the Economy” and “Another Now: Dispatches from an Alternative Present”. His latest book, “Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism”, focuses on large web-based oligopolies which have transformed contemporary life. In this episode Yanis Voroufakis on Technofeudalism  released on January 31, Randeria and her guest explore the concept of technofeudalism and the role of digital platforms in governing the lives of individuals. How has the cloud created a feedback loop that removes agency from those who produce data? And what are the effects of technofeudalism on democratic politics?
