The ecological aspects of clearfelling at different scales in Dutch forests

Clearfelling, or clearcutting, the complete harvesting of trees on a contiguous area, is considered by the new Forest Strategy to be one of the possible interventions in forest management in the Netherlands. But there is uncertainty about the ecological aspects of clearfelling: does this match with the strategic ambitions for climate and biodiversity? Yes, but the scale and context in which clearfelling takes place must be taken into account, as is shown by Wageningen University Research. For example, clearcutting is strongly discouraged in old forests.
