Derweesh earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his urology residency at Yale followed by fellowships in urologic oncology and renal transplantation and renovascular surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He joins Rush Urology after having held clinical and leadership roles at the University of California San Diego and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Memphis.
He has authored over 300 publications and currently serves on the Board for the Society of Urologic Oncology Clinical Trials Consortium (SUO-CTC) and the SUO-Fellowship Committee in addition to serving on the editorial board of Urologic Oncology, JU Open Plus, Minerva Urologica e Nefrologica, and Therapeutic Advances in Urology. He has also served as an assistant editor for the Journal of Urology and on the editorial board of BJU International, in addition to serving on the National Cancer Center Network’s Practice Guideline Panels for Kidney Cancer (2015-2025), AUA Kidney Cancer Guidelines Panels for the Clinical T1 Renal Mass (2009), Follow-up of Localized Renal Neoplasm (2013) and Renal Mass and Localized Renal Cancer (2017). He has also participated in the AUA Leadership Program (2014-2015), the AUA-EAU Exchange Program (2016) and was designated as one of the AUA’s Choosing Wisely Champions (2017).
Beyond his clinical work at Rush, Derweesh is actively involved in advancing the surgical innovation and outcomes in kidney cancer care and the use of biomarkers and neoadjuvant therapies in the delivery of personalized cancer care.
Outside of the medical center, he enjoys collecting art, watching sports and live music, traveling and hiking.
