Democracy in Question: Raimund Löw on the Dithering Austrian Democracy

The latest episode of the Democracy in Question podcast, hosted by CEU President and Rector Shalini Randeria, features journalist and historian Raimund Löw. Löw has conducted historical research at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the history of the labor movement in Austria, as well as at the International Institute for Social History in Amsterdam. He works as a foreign policy expert for the ORF, writes for Falter and runs the podcast Falter Radio. From 2015 to 2017 he was the ORF s Asia correspondent in Beijing. Before that, he reported from Moscow, Washington, Latin America, the Middle East and Brussels. In 2006 he received the Bruno Kreisky Prize for the political book for his anthology  “Fantasy and Power. 1968 and After”. In 2009 Löw received the Axel Corti Television Prize, and in 2011 he was foreign policy journalist of the year.
In this episode Raimund Löw on the Dithering Austrian Democracy  released on October 9, Randeria and her guest explore the recent national elections in Austria and the victory of a radical right-wing party. How is this development situated within the EU s broader shift to the right? And what explains the decline of the traditional center-right and the Social Democrats? Listen to hear about the issues that dominated public discourse during the campaign and about the current state of democracy in Austria.
For each episode of Democracy in Question, Randeria invites a leading scholar or public figure to explore the challenges and dilemmas facing democracies around the world. Listen to the trailer and subscribe here. Series nine of Democracy in Question is produced in partnership with the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy at the Graduate Institute in Geneva (AHCD) where Randeria is a Senior Fellow. ACHD and the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna co-produced seasons one and two of the podcast.
