In the Footsteps of Bartók: Collaborations and Improvisations

In the Footsteps of Béla Bartók: Music of Asia Minor Inspired by the groundbreaking research carried out by the renowned ethnomusicologist and composer Béla Bartók in the 1930s, this concert juxtaposes compositions for string quartet and traditional Turkish instruments. Join Princeton faculty violinist, Anna Lim, to explore the influence of Bartók on the music of his contemporaries, including Saygun and Akses, who traveled with Bartók in Anatolia in 1936. Turkish composers Erberk Eryılmaz and Mahir Cetiz will offer new chamber works and co-moderate the program. In celebration of the many cultures of the region we will perform music of composers Komitas and Gurdjieff from the late Ottoman period. Oud virtuoso Ara Dinkjian and clarinet virtuoso İsmail Lumanovski will interweave improvised ‘interludes” and Turkish traditional music.
