Democracy in Question: Ivan Krastev on the European Elections

The latest episode of the Democracy in Question podcast, hosted by CEU President and Rector Shalini Randeria, features Ivan Krastev, permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna and chairman of the Center for Liberal Strategies in Sofia. Krastev is a founding board member of the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, as well as a board member of the Open Society Foundation and of the International Crisis Group. Previously, he served as Executive Director of the International Commission on the Balkans. In 2020, he was awarded the Jean-Marie Prize for European Essay Writing. He has been a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, and he publishes regularly in the Financial Times. Trained as a political scientist, Krastev is the author of widely acclaimed books such as “Democracy Disrupted”, “In Mistrust We Trust”, “After Europe”, and most recently, the award-winning “The Light That Failed” co-authored with Stephen Holmes.  In this episode Ivan Krastev on the European Elections  released on June 19, Randeria and her guest explore how populism has irreversibly transformed the political landscape. How does digital media play a role in this phenomenon and why has populism been successful in some advanced western democracies?
