Empathy Beyond Borders draws upon the success of the Spring 2025 Efron Center Emergency Immigrant Roundtable, which convened a group of academics, advocates, and community organizers for a conversation on immigrant rights. Our event aims to spark dialogue on the state of immigrant civil rights across the United States, while also equipping attendees with the tools and strategies to protect their communities and themselves. We will be joined by a panel of legal experts, community organizers, and academics to guide this conversation, which members of the PPLS board will moderate. We would like for people to understand how the disenfranchisement of immigrants from emerging countries around the world is not a recent phenomenon, but has been a slow and steady progression. Given the urgency and broader pertinence of this event’s topics, it will be open to the wider Princeton community and public (in addition to students). The discussion will include a brief presentation on how students can get involved in local organizing efforts, which will provide attendees with a tangible takeaway from the event beyond the important legal insights provided by our panelists. Finally, we will conclude with brief small group discussions, during which attendees can reflect on the content presented and share ideas for collective action.
