The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Joincap Capital Limited to jointly promote the development of Hong Kong’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. Under the agreement, Joincap Capital will provide at least HK$150 million in funding to support 15 CUHK startup projects. Each project will receive up to HK$10 million in investment, empowering CUHK students, alumni, researchers and entrepreneurs who are using CUHK intellectual properties to launch innovative ventures with social and environmental impact.
Selected projects will include approved projects under the RAISe+ Scheme of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, and enterprises incubated by other major CUHK entrepreneurship programmes.
The MoU was signed by Professor Allen Chan Kwan-chee, CUHK’s Associate Vice-President (Knowledge Transfer) and Mr Fung Siu-hung, Managing Director of Joincap Capital. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Professor Sham Mai-har, CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Mr Boran Xue, Chairman of Joincap Capital.
Professor Sham emphasised that CUHK, a research university deeply rooted in Hong Kong yet globally oriented, has consistently prioritised innovation and research. The University focuses on translating advanced research into practical outcomes while nurturing talent. This collaboration with Joincap Capital exemplifies an ideal partnership, merging academic research resources with professional capital. It signifies the start of a joint initiative to foster an innovation ecosystem in the Greater Bay Area, offering startups in the region a significant boost of momentum.
Mr Xue emphasised Joincap Capital’s firm belief that innovation is key to driving social progress. As a leading research university in Asia, CUHK has a strong track record in nurturing outstanding startups. This collaboration harnesses CUHK’s research excellence and extensive talent network, alongside Joincap Capital’s resources and industry experience, with the goal of cultivating more globally competitive innovative enterprises and promoting social advancement and sustainable development.
Beyond funding, both parties plan to organise a series of activities, seminars and entrepreneurship competitions to promote startup culture and inspire innovative thinking. Joincap Capital will also co-invest with CUHK’s affiliated companies in angel or venture capital funds to support more startups, further enhancing the synergy among the government, industry, academia, research and investment sectors, and injecting greater momentum into Hong Kong’s innovation and technological development.
